Super Falcons Return Home to Hero’s Welcome, Honoured by President Tinubu

The Nigerian delegation to the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) arrived today at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, greeted by a jubilant crowd of government officials, football fans, and cultural performers.

President Bola Tinubu is hosting the victorious Super Falcons at Aso Rock in Abuja following their remarkable 3-2 triumph over Morocco in Saturday’s thrilling WAFCON final held at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium.

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade dedicated the win to Nigerians, highlighting the achievement as a source of inspiration for young girls across the country. “This victory celebrates every girl who dares to dream, every family that believes in unity, and all Nigerians who proudly carry our green and white flag,” she said.

“This title is for you, Mr. President. It is for Nigerians, for the Super Falcons, and for every Nigerian girl who dreams of standing on this stage,” Ajibade added.

In recognition of their success, President Tinubu will honour the players and coaching staff with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), alongside a three-bedroom apartment and a $100,000 reward for each team member. Prior to the final, Tinubu had sent a presidential delegation to Morocco to support the team.

In a statement released by the State House, the President described the Super Falcons’ performance throughout the tournament as “awe-inspiring” and emblematic of Nigeria’s national pride and resilience. He also praised the team for showing sportsmanship, particularly after their semi-final victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, when players visited injured opponent Gabriela Salgado.

Following the final win, President Tinubu expressed his pride in the team, saying, “I am extremely proud of you. The entire nation celebrates you. You have lifted our spirits and brought pride to your generation. Congratulations to the players, coaches, and officials. Special regards to Rasheedat—you showed immense courage during the penalty kick. God bless you all. Safe journey home and enjoy your well-deserved celebration.”
