A senior lecturer at Kogi State University, Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has passed away in a hotel room after an encounter with a 22-year-old female student.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, was later reported to the Anyigba Police Division, leading to the arrest of the student for questioning.

Dr. Ibikunle, known on campus as a strict academic, had reportedly faced previous allegations of requesting sexual favours from female students in exchange for academic benefits. He was said to have checked into the hotel with the 200-level student from the Social Studies Education department. Sources claim the lecturer consumed several energy drinks before the incident.

According to reports, he collapsed during the encounter and was later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.

The spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the development on Friday. He stated that the student has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further inquiries.

Aya explained that the police were alerted on July 16 by the hotel manager, identified as Moses Friday, who reported that the lecturer had lodged at the facility with the student. The manager said the young woman rushed to the reception to report that the lecturer had suddenly slumped.

Police officers immediately visited the scene and moved the lecturer to the hospital, where a doctor confirmed him dead on arrival. An autopsy has been conducted, and the Command awaits the full results as investigations continue.
