151 Senior Nigeria Police Officers Face Disciplinary Trial Over Misconduct, Extortion and Brutality Allegations

Abuja, July 2025 – No fewer than 151 senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and above, are currently appearing before the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) on allegations of serious professional misconduct.

The 10-day special disciplinary sitting, which commenced on Monday, July 14, 2025, was ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following multiple petitions from members of the public, lawyers, and civil society organizations. The complaints range from alleged extortion, brutality, abuse of power, and other ethical violations.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the development in a statement in Abuja, stressing that the IGP remains committed to sanitizing the Force and restoring public confidence.

The Nigeria Police Force will not tolerate indiscipline or unethical behavior in any form. Every officer found wanting after due process will face appropriate sanctions,” Adejobi said.

He explained that the Force Disciplinary Committee is an internal mechanism designed to thoroughly investigate and adjudicate cases involving senior officers. After the panel concludes its work, recommendations will be forwarded to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for final decision and possible punishments, including dismissal, demotion, or other administrative actions.

The ongoing exercise is seen as part of IGP Egbetokun’s broader reform agenda to promote accountability, professionalism, and zero tolerance for corruption within the Nigeria Police Force.
